Do’s and don’ts of pest control

It’s possible to have safe pest control. Here are some handy tips on how that can be achieved.

Do try prevention first

Prevention is always best, and the way to achieve that is through removing any potential food, water and shelter sources that pests can have.

  • Food crumbs attract pests. Don’t leave pet food out overnight. Keep food safely stored in sealed containers, with garbage being placed in covered trash cans. Take out your garbage regularly.
  • Don’t allow water to accumulate in your home. To do that, fix leaky plumbing, don’t leave pet water out overnight, and don’t let water collect under your plants or fridge.
  • Keep your home clean. Stacks of books, cardboard and clothes give pests places to breed and hide.
  • Keep your home sealed. Check for holes in your roof, crevices around cabinets, and fill spaces around pipes.

Do dispose of leftover pesticides and it’s containers

Read the label and dispose of the leftover pesticide correctly. If you’re keeping the leftover pesticide, firmly seal it in its original container and keep it out of reach of children. You should also take care to never mix pesticides, as this could cause a harmful chemical reaction.

Don’t use outdoor chemicals inside

Outdoor chemicals used indoors will remain toxic for longer than they should. If you have an indoor pest problem, use an indoor pesticide instead.

Don’t assume twice as much is better

Using too much of a pesticide can be dangerous, so follow the exact instructions on the label.
